loading mangos to get trousers
Dec 17th, 2007 by enroute
I guess the headline tells everything, but I am still going to be a bit more detailed.
In the moment we are resting in and near “Monkey island” on Ometepe, Lago de Nicaragua.
Our last place was Santo Domingo, right between Ometepe´s two vulcanos (which are always covered in clouds).
It appeard that we must have forgotten Hennas trousers on the washing line in Santo Domingo, so I decided to go and get them (even though Henna looks spectacular without).
I decided to hitch hike and walked about one long kiiiiilometer to Mérida, since there are more cars than here.
In Mérida was one car, heading in the right direction. The little minus:
The pick-up style car was driving slowly up the road, loading bags with little mangos.
So I had a ride but found myself more helping with loading than actually riding. At some point the car was full (really!!!) and we picked up some more peole and the journey towards Hennas trousers began.
The trousers were still hanging on the washing line and after I took them off, I headed back to Mérida.
This time I was lucky with a empty banana truck. The little truck was driving at neckbraking speed and the guys in the back were throwing out rotting banana leaves and smashed bananas.
What fun. Bumpy road, full speed, a little kid in the truck was throwing himself into the banana-smash on the ground and the two guys were lauging at the kit. I was standing there, feeling like the misunderstood gringo.
The truck turned off at some point and I continued with a motorbike and later on the back of an american families´ fourwheel drive.
I was amazed by the little amount of vehicles, but I was even more amazed by the fact that every vehicle there was, gave me a lift. Thanks.
